Fashion Pakistan Week - a three day event that took place on the 7th, 8th and 9th of April 2016. Although the show was a success, with international buyers that attended the event and trending on social madia, what was disappointing to see was most of the designers played safe and chose to stick to their signature style. Let's have a look at FPW16 Spring/Summer collections.
Day1:
Deepak Perwani:
Deepak Perwani's Fix It collection was an ode to the beautiful city Karachi. Fix It collection is based on the current political scenario of the turmoil Karachi is going through. The designer used this slogan on various pieces in his collection with geometrical patterns being the main highlight. Sarwat Gillani and Sikander Rizvi walked the ramp as the showstoppers for the designer.
Wardha Saleem:
Wardha Saleem showcased her resort/luxury pret collction that she recently showcased at London Fashion Scout. The inspiration behind the collection is the vibrant and rich culture of Pakistan, showing the brighter side of the country through its design philosophy that is happy, playful and free spirited. The collection comprises of digital printed silhouettes and matching separates made through techniques like quilting, patchwork, applique and embroidery. Statement trousers and hand painted bags in collaboration with Jafferjees were the main highlight of the collection.
Lala Textiles:
Lala Textiles collection titled "Sheen" was more of a fusion of eastern and western cuts. The collection embodied the use of the finest fabrics in hues of gold accompanied by signature stones embellishments and sequences of zari embroidery interpreted across a range of silhouettes. Actress Ayeza Khan walked the ramp for Lala Textiles.
Bank Alfalah Rising Talent:
Bank Alfalah provides a platform for young designers to present their talent on the ramp. Four contestants got the opportunity to showcase their designs for the first time ever at the FPW 16. They were Nida Sohail and Uzair Sardar from AIFD, Syeda Urmia Naqvi and Shanza Jamil from Indus School of Arts & Architecture. Uzair Sardar was declared as the winner of the competition because of his creativity.
Kayseria:
Kayseria's luxury pret collection titled "Royal Delhi" was inspired by the royal courts of Delhi. The collection showcased the finest silks with the most intricate hand crafted embellishments and embroideries.
FPW Trend Show:
Designers were Nida Tapal for Delphi, Maheen Karim, Obaid Sheik and Sanam Chaudhri. Nida Tapal presented four silhouettes staying true to Delphi's forte of playing with luxurious crochets entwined with subtle intricate embellishments. Maheen Karim's collection had a very summery vibe with tropical prints combined with deep shades of teal. Obaid Sheik showcased all men's collection. Flared pants and playful prints Sanam Chaudhri's uber chic collection surely caught everyone's eyes.
Gulabo:
Gulabo by Maheen Khan showcased their latest collection on the first day of FPW16. Titled "I AM Karachi" the inspiration behing Gulabo's Spring Summer Collection is the city of Karachi and the world. The city that has heart. Where art, architecture, cuisine and fashion of the world are embraced with open arms. The collection was incorporated with jumpsuits and separates and printing techniques that was very of the Gulabo signature style. Ayesha Omar opened for Gulabo.
Day 2:
Zaheer Abbas:
Zaheer Abbas' collection was all-white cottens with no bling no glam. Baggy shirts styled with belts, Zaheer Abbas' collection was very boho-chic and refreshing! Humaima Malick walked for Zaheer Abbas.
Jafferjees:
Jafferjees spring/summer collection 2016 celebrated its legacy of 135 years and showcased it most popular vintage bags. Jafferjees paired their traditionals bags with the vintage charm of Wardha Saleem styled by Nubain Ali.
Gul Ahmed:
Gul Ahmed's The Electric Collection was fun and eye catching. Mirror work and chunri, there was assymetric kaftans and slouchy tie-n-dye shirts and long jackets, it was a trendy collection.
Amir Adnan:
Amir Adnan showcased his collection men's collection Escape inspired by street style and city boys. Kurtas were paired with a range of trending pant styles that gave the collection a very hip feel. Azfer Rehman walked for Amir Adnan in a crisp white kurta layered with a black waistcoat and a textured blue sports jacket.
Huma Adnan:
Huma Adnan presented her collection 'Organic Modernity' which was about things which touch the heart. The collection showcased casual style accentuated with an uptown look. Sonya Hussayn walked the ramp for Huma Adnan.
Nauman Arfeen:
Nauman Arfeen's Carpe Diem, an all men's collection, was a collection for all. From young boys to adults, there was colour and great prints and kurtas paired with shalwars and dhotis, everyone loved it!
Zainab Salman:
Zainab Salman's Moon Struck looked like a fairy tale at the ramp. The collection was inspired by a mid summer night's dream that showcases a summer night's romance not to be forgotten. Ruffles and bows and pearl embellishments, the pastel colour palette was quite soothing to the eye.Some of the designs didn't make much sense tho.
Ayesha Farook Hashwani:
Ayesha F. Hashwani's collection was inspired by Chinese culture. Beautiful prints and vibrant colours, the designer sticked to her signature style showcasing capes and kaftans and pants.
Day 3:
Sonya Batla:
Sonya Batla opened day 3 with her very dramatic and haute couture collection but didn't leave many impressed by the end of it. Ruffles and drapes, the creation was too conceptual for fashion week. Asad-ul-Haq walked for Sonya Batla holding a smoking incense burner.
Generation:
Generation presented Khadija Rahman's first collection 'A Dot That Went For A Walk'. The collection is inspired from artist extraordinaire Paul Klee's quote 'the line is a dot that went for a walk'. The collection was based mainly in cottons with voile bases accented with metallic tissue and velvets. The cuts involved kurta, jama, shalwar and even the dupatta comes under the knife and finds new forms with embellishments like appliqués, gota work and a reinterpretation of fringing. The colour palette began with hues of a limpet shell sky, it incorporates shades of ivory and a muddled cloud grey while gradually transcending into darker shades.
Alkaram:
Alkaram studio showcased the seasons latest digital lawn collection which was a synthesis of color combined with abstract florals. The inspiration behind the collection was the global inspiration from the ethnic world, with hints of bohemia and kitsch motivations. This collection is eclectic yet it remains deeply rooted to our cultural heritage and traditional values. Syra Shahroze walked for Alkaram.
Natasha Kamal:
Natasha Kamal's collection titled 'Luxxotica' was inspired from the tropics and had a very retro vibe. The collection showed reference from bold blooms, leafy botanicals and exotic animal prints. The colour palette was natural hues, with shades ranging from rich spices to soft pastels. Rainforest inspired patterns created using appliqué, intricate beadwork, embroidery and cutwork detailing.
Nida Azwer:
Nida Azwer showcased ‘Kirigami’- a variation of origami that includes cutting of the paper rather than solely folding the paper. This art form has been translated onto the fabric in this collection through layering, cutwork and experimental embroidery. The collection uses sheer fabrics such as organza mixed with contrasting opaque fabrics such as silks and tissue, materializing the concept of layering using different techniques like leather cutwork, digital embroidery, and experimental hand work using organza, ribbons, pearls, beads and crystals. With a diverse colour palette ranging from hues of teal, mauve, greys and white, the collection features structured and flowy silhouettes featuring wrap pants, jogger pants and Nida Azwer Atelier’s signature dhotis paired with fusion tops, jackets and capes ideal for this summer season.
Zainab Chottani:
This time Zainab Chottanis took a 360 degree turn and went from totally eastern to toally western. Stepping away from her forte, her collection 'Club Cobalt' is all about effortlessly looking trendy and uptown chic. Classic street style denim looked uber chic with organza, silk, and shiffon capes and stylish cuts. This collection included bell bottoms, culottes, capes, and gowns with shades of denim, ripped and faded effects. Iman Ali (my personal favourite), after a very long time walked for Zainab Chottani and set the ramp on fire.
Aamna Aqeel:
Aamna Aqeel's 'Stare', inspired from nature, is a collection of black and white with bright colors making Summers vibrant. The collection included Aamna Aqeel’s signature jackets, summery haram pants, jump suits, dresses and relaxing dhoti pants. The elaborated decorations included bed of sequence with intricate handwork. Mantaha Maqsood walked for Aamna Aqeel.
Shamaeel Ansari:
Inspired from the Japenese collection Shamaeel Ansari’s ‘Yugure’ was fashion forward and powerful! Atiya Khan opened for Shamaeel Ansari and the show ended with Zhalay Sarhadi’s walk.
